 AFTER THE INTERVIEW – MAKING IT HAPPEN:

The interview is over, you think you did well and you made a good impression.  It is just a matter of waiting for that confirming call to offer you the position, right?  Wrong, the next steps you take can make all the difference between getting that job or remaining unemployed or at your current job that may be heading nowhere or in the wrong direction.  The follow-up actions that you personally take can make all the difference between being offered the job or not.   Here are the suggested next steps:


Send a Follow-Up Thank You Letter:

You should have:

  • Gotten each person’s name and understand where they fit in
  • Make notes on the interview.
  • Schedule a follow up.
  • Send a thank-you note.
  • Call when you said you would.

In your follow-up thank you letter or note to the person or persons that interviewed you make sure that do the following:

  • Personalize it, avoid making the letters or notes to everyone look the same.
  • Get their name and title right.
  • Summarize the key points of the interview.
  • If a problem came up, repeat your resolution of it.
  • Review your strengths for the job.
  • Keep it short and sweet.
  • Close by stating that you are hopeful of joining their team.
  • Don’t try to negotiate at this point.


Closing the Deal:

Once a job offer is made, negotiations can be as simple as saying, "When can I start?" Keep in mind that the time to discuss vacations and benefits is at this time.  Some companys have limitations on their flexibilty to change policy due to the effect it can have internally.  What ever their individual policy is, it also protects you once you are on board.


Making a Final Decision:

If you are having a difficult time making a decision, don't be worried, as things are often not a 100% one way or the other situation. Ben Franklin often wrote a list on a sheet of paper with weight factors under two columns The Plus side and the Negative side (why to and why not to).  The larger list with greater weight was his decision.  Remember almost never is something a complete 100% one sided decision.  You see a leaning direction and then make a choice.  Once the choice is made the rest of the pieces fall together and most minor road blocks become speed bumps that you get past.  It's that simple and things do work out.
