Position: Senior Packaging Engineer
Working independently
or as part of a project team, candidate will be responsible for research, development, documentation and testing
to develop packaging solutions for new and existing products. In this role the ideal candidate will be responsible for
the development of packaging materials by working independently, and with vendors, to research, develop, test,
recommend, review, and identify costs for various packaging design proposals, and to create bill of materials and specifications
for packaging implementation. This position requires the ability to provide technical mentorship and strong
personal leadership within the Packaging Department.
Responsibilities: (65% of Duties) - Research, develop and test and implement various proposals for packaging design.
- Collaborate with
project initiator on project objectives and expectations.
- Utilize various packaging material
substrates in the design of primary, secondary and tertiary packaging that minimizes material usage and labor implications
while enhancing retail acceptance.
- Determine impact on new packaging design
to existing and new automation at manufacturing locations.
- Modify designs accordingly to
optimize manufacturing and labor efficiencies. Recommend, select and execute packaging designs.
- Develop
and execute design of experiment/test methodologies on packaging materials.
- Ascertain that
studies are properly designed, conducted and reported to effectively support product development projects.
- Consistently
apply in depth technical expertise to develop new packaging, packaging processes and testing methods with the ability to interface
with internal customers.
- Responsible for determining packaging material specifications
to maintain product integrity. This includes development of appropriate design to maximize long term quality and shelf life
of product while minimizing cost.
- Conduct analytical testing on materials and interpret data findings.
- Propose design recommendations to customer as a result of findings.
- Ensure
project success by keeping project on schedule through written and oral correspondence while evaluating technical data, i.e.
lab results, collaborative tests, distribution tests and line trials.
- Work with team
members to implement quality processes and system improvements as a result of learning's to ensure long term corrective actions.
This includes better product presentation at retail.
- Develops project plans that
define scope, adherence to schedule, costs, business impact and risks. Executes plans and identifies issues or obstacles,
proposes solutions, gains alignment and brings to resolution.
- Highlights risks
to project team and assists in elimination of road blocks when encountered.
- Applies logic in problem solving
and analysis of alternatives to asses the financial and operations impact of business initiatives.
- Assesses
critical information to make effective decisions or recommendations. Independent ability to develop root cause analysis.
- Executes
plans and identifies issues or obstacles, gains alignment and brings to resolution.
- Develop
and implement engineering designs to improve efficiencies, increase capacity and reduce costs. Builds consensus across functions
as project team leader on complex projects and initiatives.
- Mentors engineering colleagues
and shares knowledge with others within the organization.
- Provides technical expertise within
the broader packaging department.
- Participates in packaging optimization teams
and acts as a packaging expert to facilitate changes in process to improve organizational efficiencies.
- Develop
and maintain a professional knowledge of new and emerging trends in packaging technology. Identify areas of opportunity to
implement these new technologies into packaging solutions.
- Seek, assess and resolve packaging
design problems on existing items.
- Initiates ideation sessions and works with
marketing to lead the development of concepts that contribute to consumer purchase decisions. Initiates testing on new packaging
concepts that help fulfill unmet consumer needs and drive incremental sales.
(20% of Duties) - Ensures the accuracy
of specifications issued, including mechanical drawings and written text. Prepare and provide cost estimates for new packaging
materials.
- Identify potential cost implications to all areas of the business regarding
packaging changes and communicate impact to industrial engineering.
- Develop packaging
bill of materials and enter into project management system for manufacturing/co-pack implementation.
(15% of Duties) - Identifies,
initiates and drives to conclusion packaging studies aimed at decreasing costs, reducing material usage while maintaining
product/cosmetic integrity.
- Partner with procurement on implementation of cost reduction
initiatives. Conduct value analysis and cost reduction activities on packaging materials and labor reduction.
- Review internal (Company) and external (customer) data to investigate and develop causation
of packaging failure and develop/implement corrective actions accordingly. Identify areas of opportunity to standardize materials
to realize volume leverage pricing for packaging components.
- Partner with strategic sourcing
in development of packaging development strategy /cost containment opportunities.
| | | | Requirements: | Role Requires:
B.S. in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical
Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related science field.
Experience: 6-10 Years experience in a packaging development technology is desired and preferred.
This position may be filled at various levels depending on experience. Finally, a very strong
candidate with or 8-12 years experience in Packaging Development without a degree may also qualify as long as they meet the
above criteria.
