Description:
Our client has a full range of products that are used by consumers across a wide spectrum.  They have revenues of over $7 billion and are distributed globally.  They are known for product innovation, industry-leading advertising efforts and trusted brands.  Our client is an EEO Employer, dedicated to a culturally diverse, drug free work place.   Continued growth has resulted in the need for a Senior Packaging Engineer to join their dynamic team.

Position:  Senior Packaging/Applicator Engineer
This professional is responsible for the technical management of packaging and applicator development projects, value engineering/cost savings projects, and driving process improvements related to both packaging and applicator systems.  Project scope can range from supporting a simple vendor change to a developing a completely unique packaging and/or applicator system. Typical project activities include: concept design and evaluation, technical feasibility analysis, establishing performance criteria and test plan, determining manufacturing approach, conducting qualification testing, executing design refinements, documenting specifications and supporting commercial product launches.  Project management responsibilities include: establishing project goals, identifying key stakeholders, managing timelines and budget, collaborating with Marketing, Procurement, Operations, and leveraging internal and external resources.  This leader needs to be capable of representing Packaging and Applicators in a cross functional setting at the VP level without manager support and seen as the functional expert and key technical lead on project teams.  All this activity must be managed in an ethical pro-active manner to assure that environmental, product, and safety is not compromised. 
Key Work Performed:
  • Manages all technical aspects of packaging and applicator projects.
  • Develops and manages the technical work plan, budget and timeline from concept to implementation.
  •  Drives innovation and efficiencies into new and existing packaging and applicator systems. Givenical direction to build strategic plans.
  • Develops cost estimates for new packaging and applicator programs.
  • Collaborates closely with colleagues in R&D, Supply Chain, and Marketing to ensure project goals are achieved with efficient use of internal and external resources. 
  • Establishes and maintains relationships with outside design/engineering resources and manufacturers in compliance with corporate legal and ethics standards.
  • Effectively manages external resources to provide deliverables which meet project goals, including concept and design generation, prototyping, analysis, and manufacturing.
  • Provides assistance to Operations and External Operations during startup of new products or packages.
  • Identifies novel packaging and applicator concepts to satisfy unmet customer/consumer needs.
  • Performs feasibility testing to determine commercialization potential and activities to ensure compliance with corporate Environmental, Health, and Safety principles.
  • Coaches and develops technical skills of interns and junior engineers.  May supervise one or more individual contributors.

Requirements:
Role Requires:  B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Science or Chemical Engineering

Experience:  3-10 Years experience in Mechanical Product Development or Packaging Development with a focus on injection molded parts.  In addition the individual should have a strong track record of project management and successful product launches within a consumer goods company.  Preference for candidates that have experience with product design engineering for chemical packaging, have experience with injection molded plastics and resins.  In addition, the company would favor candidates that have patents for designs that they have engineered.  In addition the individual should have a strong track record of project management and successful product launches within a consumer goods company.  They also should have:
  • Proven expertise with statistical product qualification methods and equipment.
  • History of team-oriented problem solving in a cross-functional environment.
  • Supervision and training of designers/technicians.
  • Knowledge:
  • Technical knowledge obtained from the successful completion of an undergraduate degree in Packaging Science, Mechanical Engineering or Chemical Engineering.
  • Knowledge of thermoplastic part design, engineering, tooling, and manufacturing in a high volume, low cost environment.
  • Ability to apply fundamental engineering principles for the evaluation and optimization of Company's' packaging and applicators.
  • Knowledge of rapid prototyping methods best suited for a given product design and material.
  • Knowledge of commercially available packaging and applicator systems, common materials of use and manufacturing processes.
  • Skills and Abilities:
  • Ability to use current PC-based software (e.g., Microsoft Windows, Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Access, Project, etc.).
  • Working knowledge of Pro/Engineer CAD software
  • Ability to conduct physical labor inside or outside, with or without an accommodation
  • Ability to lift 40lbs, with or without an accommodation
