DESCRIPTION - PRIMARY DUTIES:
Our client is one of the largest manufactures of medical devices and supplies.  They are a global healthcare company committed to making strategic investments for continued growth in Healthcare.  They are a leading manufacturer of supplies, diagnostic imaging agents and pharmaceuticals, with 2009 revenue of nearly $11 billion and industry-leading profit margins.  The have more than 43,000 employees worldwide in 59 countries, with products sold in over 140 countries.  They are dedicated to R&D, spending nearly $350 million in R&D during 2009 alone, with that amount expected to increase in 2010.  In short, they are committed to creating innovative medical solutions for better patient outcomes.  They are seeking a packaging professional to join their dynamic team. 

Position:  Principal Packaging Sustainability Engineer
The Principal Packaging Sustainability Engineer is responsible for developing and executing strategies for sustainable medical device packaging and supporting the company’s overall sustainability initiatives. Responsibilities will include packaging spend & trend analysis, internal and external voice of the customer, benchmarking, and opportunity analysis. The ideal candidate will have superior communication skills, be able to lead cross functional teams and have the ability to influence and gain support across all levels of the organization. This position will be responsible for establishing the overall packaging sustainability system including metrics, goals, tracking, and progress against the goals for all company businesses globally. The incumbent must act as an influencer of the organization to drive the awareness, need, and overall direction of the packaging sustainability program. This position requires occasional travel, some international, not exceeding 20%.
 

Essential Functions:
  • Expertise in design for green and life cycle analysis (material selection, design, and configuration of the different packaging levels)
  • Optimize both internal and external customer benefits by identifying, evaluating, and recommending new packaging materials for cost effectiveness, carbon footprint and recyclability.
  • Provide in-house packaging engineering consultation to packaging, regulatory, R&D, and quality groups across the company globally.
  • Able to work independently with minimal direction and effectively plan, implement, delegate, and monitor deliverables.
 Reports to:  Director of Engineering, Centers of Excellence
REQUIREMENTS - IDEAL BACKGROUND:

Role Requires:  B.S. in Package Engineering or related engineering field.

Experience:  7 Plus Years or more of direct relevant experience with preference for both medical device and pharmaceutical industries.  Ideal candidate will have proven experience with Strategy development relating to packaging sustainability.

Preferred Skills/Qualifications: 
Six Sigma preferred. Green packaging design with a working knowledge of ISO, FDA, international regulatory, and quality requirements applicable to both medical device and pharmaceutical packaging.  Exceptional communicator capable of selling ides and strategies internally to influence the organization.  Proven track record of leading cross-functional, organization-wide teams.  Working knowledge of packaging processes and equipment associated with both flexible and rigid forming materials (FFS, flow wrap, paper and board materials, corrugate, and others).
