Although they are technically a chemical company, they want candidates with CPG experience and the packaging they use includes rigid plastics (blow and injection molded), flexibles, folding cartons, and corrugated that are sold in retail outlets including major ones.. .

 Position Overview:  The Packaging Engineer works within the Package Development Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining existing products and developing innovative packaging and devices for line extensions and new products across multiple categories. The position will provide project management for packaging led projects and ensure proper documentation, industry compliance and testing results are generated. In addition, this position will support optimization initiatives by researching new package materials, forms and processes.

Primary Role Responsibilities:

·        Work within the Packaging and cross functional teams to support both current business commercialization activities as well as upstream package development by conducting packaging line trials, laboratory testing, and distribution tests.

·        Timely, clear, concise and accurate reporting of results with next steps required for most projects. Recommend changes to packaging design, process or materials as experience dictates. 

·        Strive to be fully integrated with all currently used packaging materials and work teams to provide optimal packages to meet quality, timing and value requirements of the business.   Provide corrective actions when called upon.

·        Support product changes through design of primary package through pallet layout and development of specifications to meet the Fitness For Use needs from manufacturing, logistics & handling to the end user.  “Seek to Win” at all touch points on the way to shelf and end user.

·        Stay in-touch externally for packaging innovations and trends so that new technologies can be leveraged in new products and new product packaging.

·        Quality Responsibilities

·        Quality is owned by all.  Develop/update packaging specifications and bills of materials.  Ensure quality parts via documentation and qualification protocols for a quality use experience.

·        Safety Responsibilities

·        Safety is owned by all.  Candidate will have frequent exposure to labs and manufacturing environments.  Candidate will work daily with personal, transit and end user safety in mind.

·        Job Scope

·        Scope of work will support regional, national and international programs.  The nature of the work will be combination of both Product Supply (Current Business) and upstream R&D Packaging.

·        Travel: ~ 10% domestic. (Mostly Southeast & Midwest)


Education:  A Bachelor of Science degree in Packaging Engineering or equivalent.

Experience:  Requires 5-10 years of related Chemical or CPG packaging experience.

Skill Requirements:

  • Exposure to manufacturing environments and packaging machinery relative to line trials, the packaging process and package integrity issues. 
  • Computer literate:  Fluency expectations with MS Suite (Excel, Word, Power Point).  Practical experience in either CAPE or TOPS software; SAP, Artios CAD, Solid Works and MS Project a plus.
  • Experienced with routine package testing.  ASTM, lab test protocols, ISTA and UN Certification familiarity a plus.
  • Candidate expected to possess working knowledge of packaging components rigid (blow and injection molded), flexible films and paper board in addition to printing and decoration techniques.
  • Project management. Knowledge of Process, statistics and Six Sigma a plus.
  • Experience with Hazmat/DOT packaging a plus.
  • Ability to work in an Office setting with frequent exposure to packaging labs manufacturing sites and supplier locations.
  • Ability to Travel: ~ 10% domestic. (Mostly Southeast & Midwest)
