Position: The Senior Packaging Development Engineer reports to the Director and
is responsible for the global development of the packaging of new product launches and the on-going maintenance of regular
business packaging for assigned brands and/or categories. The incumbent interfaces with Marketing, R&D, and Creative
in the discovery phase and assumes responsibility for successful execution of selected packages in the tactical phase.
Responsibilities: - Researches new packaging techniques,
materials, processes and developments to provide innovative and cost-effective packaging concepts and solutions.
- Plays
a role in determining the feasibility of new projects as they relate to cost, timing and manufacturability.
- Defines risks associated with projects for review by the Director.
- Develops timetable and critical
milestones for new product launches.
- Prepares a timely and accurate Preliminary Bill of Materials.
- Initiates supplier blueprints, models and samples.
- Ensures necessary engineering and
technical approval of selected components, including material compatibility and dispensing characteristics.
- With Procurement colleagues, reviews and recommends sources of supply.
- Ensures supplier
can maintain integrity of selected package.
- Involved in insuring design criteria are feasible
and recommending alternatives.
- Issues Final Component Specifications
- Supports value analysis efforts through
to implementation.
| REQUIREMENTS - BACKGROUND
| Education: Requires a Bachelor’s degree
in Packaging or equivalent.
Experience:
Requires a minimum of 3 or more years
experience and a thorough knowledge of packaging components, materials, and processes used by the fragrance, treatment,
and cosmetics industry. The company is looking for a candidate with a history of stability and longevity with few job
changes. Key Competencies:
- Technical training and aptitude required.
- Excellent project management skills.
- Experience in evaluating blueprints for mating components, assessing stack heights (min-max conditions)
and requesting changes to make the parts mate properly.
- Experience approving components, attending start-ups
with the supplier or assembler, and troubleshooting issues until in-spec parts are produced satisfactorily.
- Experience measuring components with calipers or vision systems without assistance.
- Experience
with torque tests, pull force tests and other performance and dimensional checks.
- Experience engineering
cosmetic packages (lipsticks, compacts, vials, brushes, deodorant, and jars).
- Experience in engineering
small (less than 6") parts injection molded in plastics, or glass containers.
- Experience in elevated
temperature testing, vibration/drop testing, protective packaging, pallet patterns and transit evaluations of
consumer goods.
- Experience independent reading and evaluating blueprints so as not to rely on vendors.
- Experience in measuring parts and working with suppliers to identify problems.
