Packaging includes aseptic, pouches, cans, totes, bulk in-bound containers, manual line QC on PET Lines, squeeze bottle line, induction seals, PET cap leaks, Remy, CombiTwist, and Primary Code Equipment – all together over 2,000 SKU’s.

Position:  The Senior Packaging Engineer will have complete control of all packaging components and related equipment to ensure cost effectiveness, package integrity, product quality, and conformance to customer specifications where applicable.

Description of Responsibilities:

·        Package specifications to adhere to the strictest Quality Assurance systems

o       Audit, improve, and/or develop a standardized packaging specification system that can be completed by our packaging vendors and approved by the Senior Packaging Engineer.

o       Document packages must include all relevant information required for the development of quality control procedures on all in-bound components to prohibit out of spec components from entering the production stream.

o       Specifications also to include how and on what size unitization or palletization system we will accept to include height, pallet size, bagged, shrink wrapped, etc.

o       All Ink Code systems

·        Packaging vendor sourcing and value engineering

o       Develop a formalized sourcing contracting system and/or documentation for the leverage and purchase of all packaging components to include, where applicable, integration with our other manufacturing plant. 

o       Documentation on price, terms, and minimum shipments will be forwarded to purchase logistics for execution against contract and/or master purchase orders.

o       Work with vendors on value engineering innovations in packaging design to decrease cost, improve operational efficiency or customer/end-user value.

·        Packaging Database: 

o       Work with IT Department to develop a comprehensive database which integrates with our packaging costs system and provides additional information as required by all departments. 

·        Packaging Equipment: 

o       Play a key role in the selection and design of all packaging related equipment and the integration of same into our operation. 

o       Have primary responsibility of the equipment and packaging supplier related issues causing inefficiencies and/or quality problems. 

·        Improve manufacturing line efficiencies, by improving addressing/maintaining these areas:

o       Waste, Bottle Paneling, Shrink Label Integrity, Glue, Automation, Bulk In-Bound Containers, Manual Line QC on PET Lines, Squeeze Bottle Line, Induction Seals, PET Cap Leaks, Remy, CombiTwist, and Primary Code Equipment.

·        Maintain maintenance related issues involving packaging equipment and line efficiencies.

·        Work with Sales and Marketing departments on all elements of bringing in-house new products to the marketplace to include outside co-packer projects. 

·        Research new package technologies that add value or reduce costs of total operation. 

·        Manage multiple package development projects for innovation, quality, sustainability, and cost savings

·        Oversee and manage the complete packing development process –  interface with Manufacturing and Supply Chain teams for packaging related projects including trials, production, cost savings and improving line efficiency related to packaging

·        Support efforts for quality monitoring and assurance processes with packaging suppliers across the network; establish standards and guidelines for supplier evaluation, evaluate and select suppliers/ vendors

·        Optimize packaging supply base for cost, lead time, quality, regionalization, standardization, supply assurance and compliance

·        Specify and recommend efficiency tools and test methods to develop and validate packaging design


Education:  Requires a Bachelor’s Degree in Packaging Engineering or related course study.

Experience:  Requires a minimum of 3-7 or more years of experience. (5+ years preferred) in packaging development, design, and manufacturing.  If the candidate is already a Senior Packaging Engineer with strong and relevant experience, they may be eligible to be hired as a Principal Packaging Engineer instead of making a lateral move in title

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Working knowledge and working application in math, sciences, and statistics
  • Expert in Auto-CAD
  • Strong project management skills required
  • Entrepreneurial mindset
  • Familiarity with high speed food manufacturing processes related to chocolate, fruit flavors, drink bases, or confectionary is very desirable
  • Experience with Excel, Word, PowerPoint, SAP, Cape Pack, Project Software, and Adobe Illustrator is very desired
  • Strong analytical thinking, problem solving skills and an aptitude for detail and strong organizational abilities a must
  • Strong presentation and interpersonal skills with customers and vendors
  • Must have proven experience in major package design from concept to shelve
