Company Overview:  This client produces a wide variety of food and drink products and has grown from their roots as a pasta sauce and salsa manufacturer to become an R&D engine, formulating and then producing innovative food, beverage and spirits for their own labels and those of national and retailer brand partners.  It is a privately held and family-run company based in Western New York state. Originally founded in 1975, they employ more than 1,000 people at five U.S. locations. They have decades-long partnerships with some of the most respected consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies and the most highly inventive retailer brands.

Products:  The company is engaged in Food and Beverage Manufacturing (Contract and Private Label), Fresh Juice Bottling, and Spirits Bottling. They also have deep experience in making pasta sauces, dips and spreads, and they have diversified in recent years to add spirits and beverage to the repertoire. They offer state-of-the-art processing, which is key to unlocking growth in the healthy and natural beverage market, including high pressure processing (HPP), cold fill aseptic and hot fill. Position Overview:  The Packaging Engineer II or III will be responsible for the creation and innovation of new product formats and their processes while supporting their implementation in multiple manufacturing areas.  The Packaging Engineer will also support the needs of the existing product portfolio through improvements and opportunities for cost reductions.  In addition, he, or she will lead the effort for packaging documentation while providing technical support to manufacturing for critical projects.  This position will utilize Project Management skills to efficiently meet internal and external stakeholder needs which result in cost effective manufacturing capability for the production of both new and existing packages.

Additional Duties & Responsibilities:

·        Collaborate with Contract Manufacturing, Corporate Engineering and Senior Management to develop annual capital plans by recommending profitability improvement projects;

·        Provide technical support to Purchasing, Planning and Manufacturing throughout component life;

·        Responsible for providing technical leadership to Product Development, Regulatory, Production, Quality, Logistics and Maintenance to design, specify, plan, implement and commission packaging design projects and ensure the delivery of project scope on time and on budget;

·        Lead weekly project update meetings with collaborative team members;

·        Responsible for the creation and maintenance of Engineering Documentation, to include; specifications, assembly instructions, Engineering Change Forms, test protocols, plans and test reports;

·        Through the using Project Management methodologies, introduces all efforts to manufacturing,

·        Remains current with latest technology related to the manufacture of the company’s products;

·        Responsible for ensuring that all aspects of a packaging system or process meet specified internal and external regulations for both safety and quality;

·        Ensures GMP’s and product safety guidelines are adhered to.

·        Selection, management and working with vendors and sub-contractors to implement packaging initiatives;

·        Creates and leverages external partnerships with key suppliers;

·        Completes the necessary testing to ensure the packaging system work at the optimum level, to the right rate and the right quality of output to meet needs;

·        Work closely with technologist, scientists and other specialists, responsible for the quality control of raw materials and finished products, as well as, engineers responsible for the plant maintenance;

·        Responsible for the development and implementation of packaging systems, including trials and test plans;

·        Leads or supports new product development projects, quality issues and/or productivity exercise;

·        Coordinates both internal and external test resources, schedules materials, labor, equipment, quality, etc.;

·        Prepare capital expenditure requests, drawings and specifications for new processes and equipment;

·        Leads development of artwork creation and revisions for product packaging;

·        Prepares packaging validation protocols and reports to support the implement of new processes and equipment;

·        Performs material qualifications for packaging changes such as corrugate, metals, compounds, glass and plastic material changes;

·        Tests new packaging methods and processes using various testing apparatus in qualification of packaging changes

·        Provide technical expertise to manufacturing while assisting with troubleshooting and the development of innovative solutions to production packaging issues;

·        Provide direction to lab and quality technicians, as required for concerns with packaging issues;

·        Prepare monthly progress reports on projects;

·        Prepare presentations as needed for company meetings;

·        May be asked to mentor and manage project work of engineers;

Report food safety & quality problems to personnel with authority to initiate action.


Education:  A Bachelor of Science or MS degree in Packaging Engineering or equivalent

Experience:  Requires 5 nor more years of experience in food, beverage or pharmaceutical industry and/or high speed packaged consumer goods manufacturing environment; Must have a minimum of 2-4 or more years of relevant industry experience.

Skills and Experiences:

  • Demonstrated experience in Supply Chain environment;
  • Demonstrated Project Management experience as a hands-on project manager delivering project scope from concept to closure on-time and on-budget including:
  • Project scope up to $1M.
  • Manage project portfolio in various stages of project life cycle.
  • Depending on projects, willingness to occasionally travel up to 40% although normally it will be 10-25%
  • Manage project stakeholders – internal / external
  • Manage project risk
  • Effective communication skills including the ability to facilitate, present, document and work in a collaborative work style;
  • Passion for continuous improvement with Lean manufacturing and/or Lean Six Sigma experience (Lean Sic Sigma Green Belt Certification, preferred);
  • Self-motivated and can motivate and influence others;
  • Certified Project Management Professional, preferred;
  • Participation in packaging related professional organization, preferred;
  • Knowledge of technical principles and dynamics of packaging systems, materials in packaging, testing methods and design of experiments;
  • Familiarity in an operations/manufacturing environment and knowledge of the relationship between packaging components and labor required to assemble components and systems;
  • Proficient in CAD, Microsoft Office Applications to include; Word, Excel, Visio and Project, as well as, Pallet Pattern software;
  • Strong communication, organizational and time management skills;
  • Ability to plan and document projects effectively;
  • Innovative problem solving;
  • Strong team and interpersonal skills;
  • Working knowledge of ASTM and ISTA package test methods and Glass Institute is preferred;
  • Writing policies, procedures, proposals and reports;
  • Medical device, pouches and tetra-pak technologies a plus;
  • Must have a minimum of 2-4 or more years of relevant industry experience.  Good verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills are required. 
  • Will work on non-routine to somewhat complex problems, requiring evaluation of multiple factors before taking action
