Will not have direct reports but will work with a Packaging & Design Coordinator.  Opportunity is a “Ground Floor” chance to develop a department as the first ever Packaging Engineer. 




Desire packaging development experience in a Cosmetic, Personal Care or Over The Counter CPG company. Will need to be a hand’s on, savvy in systems person.  Work will include setting up and maintaining SPECS and related packaging systems.

Position: The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for ongoing packaging related business support activities, the development of new primary and secondary packaging solutions, as well as design, development and commercialization of merchandising display units. In addition, he or she will be responsible for interfacing with packaging suppliers and hands-on development and testing of all materials including creating specifications. This individual will work closely with their supervisor and cross-functional team members to support and lead packaging related technical activities.

Functional Responsibilities:

·        Works collaboratively with peers and cross-functional team members and is accountable for all packaging related NPD (program management) tasks and activities.

·        Works closely with packaging component suppliers, design firms, and research affiliates to identify, develop and source primary and secondary packaging options as well as new merchandizing display solutions.

·        Supports operations and customer service teams with respect to resolving packaging related production issues.

·        Identifies/develops new, innovative, packaging, printing, and merchandizing concepts.

·        Responsible for developing and maintaining an internal packaging specifications data-base along with associated processes and procedures (SOP).

·        Responsible for complying with; GLP, cGMP, regulatory guidance documents, and company laboratory policies and procedures.

·        Works collaboratively with cross-functional business partners and colleagues to develop, support, manage and execute against all packaging project timelines.

·        Responsible for hands-on development and testing (i.e. stability, material performance) of new primary/secondary packaging solutions, printing, shippers, and merchandizing display units.

·        Supports the development of component and finished product specifications.

·        Works closely with suppliers and manufacturing to support the transfer of new packaging components and/or materials to the production floor.

·        Coordinates and manages external testing laboratories to meet timelines and reporting dates.

·        Works closely with company Regulatory Dept. to maintain global regulatory awareness with respect to resin’s, dyes/pigment safety, and packaging testing requirements (i.e. heavy metals, dye/pigment migration, processing aids).

·        Maintains awareness of global competitive and not-in-kind packaging trends.

·        Works closely with supervisor to develop packaging Intellectual Property as appropriate.

·        Responsible for all testing associated with demonstrating and supporting packaging stability/integrity and defining shipping requirements and pallet configurations.


Education:  Requires a BS or MS degree in Packaging Engineering or equivalent.

Experience:  Requires a minimum of 3 or more years of packaging development experience in a Cosmetic, Over The Counter, or household CPG company.

Desired Skills & Qualifications:

  • Experience with GLP and cGMP
  • Experience writing SOP, packaging and finished product specifications
  • Experienced in part/component design and developing new primary and secondary consumer preferred packaging designs/solutions (e.g. injection molded, extruded, co-molded, cardboard boxes/cards, blow molded, flexible packaging, film/paper/foil lamination, etc.).
  • Experience with adhesive systems (water based, hot melt, pressure sensitive etc.).
  • Working knowledge of packaging component modeling (e.g. SLA, printing etc.).
  • Working knowledge of unit and production tool design, development, and validation.
  • Hands on experience with CAD, Pro-E, Creo.
  • Experience developing/commercializing merchandizing display units - preferred
  • Hand-on working knowledge of packaging resins, corrugate, paperboard, processing aids, resin dyes/pigments, printing inks and processes, and material compatibility requirements.
  • Working knowledge of FDA and global (preferred) packaging related requirements (i.e. heavy metals, food grade, GRAS).
  • Hands-on experience regarding packaging material test methods (Mullen burst, stress-modulus, permeation, shaker table, optical comparator, drop/ship, print durability, etc.).
  • Working knowledge pertaining to consumer package verification/validation (i.e. concept testing, product-package-concept testing, qualitative and quantitative research) - preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a cross-functional project team environment
  • Experience in a product development - manufacturing environment
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Open, honest communication style
  • Strong computer skills (e.g. Word, Excel, Microsoft Project, PowerPoint) 
  • Working knowledge of statistical data treatment - preferred.
