Company Overview:  This company is a global developer, manufacturer, and marketer of pre-moistened wipes for the consumer market, specializing in personal care, hygiene, household cleaning, and disinfection products.

Position:  The Senior Packaging Engineer will support Company projects working within the R&D Packaging / Innovation Development Team.  This position will develop, lead and execute R&D plans and protocols to launch new products. He, or she, will lead R&D package innovation & development activities, ensuring milestones are met. Identify technical and project risks and ensure strategies are developed to effectively mitigate these risks.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties:

·        Understands packaging-related business needs and competitive landscape

·        Drives for excellence in project management and technical leadership in packaging programs from pre-concept initiation through hand-off and commercialization

·        Develops ideas, concepts and prototypes to solve problems and meet customer/consumer needs in new and superior ways

·        Researches packaging materials and determine the most cost effective and quality packaging available

·        Identifies needs gaps and opportunities

·        Leads the packaging development for new initiatives

·        Is the technical interface with suppliers

·        Develops timelines, risk assessment and contingency plans to ensure execution on projects

·        Identifies technical and project risks and ensures strategies are in place to effectively mitigate risks

·        Supports new plant trials for packaging materials/project work, working with cross-functional teams (Marketing, Procurement, Business Development, Production, Supply Chain and Quality)

·        Properly plans coordinates and reports each trial, provides appropriate level of technical support and troubleshooting to execute trial objectives and ensures proper documentation of each activity

·        Designs, plans and conducts analytical testing, line trials and package performance testing

·        Documents technical project work and trial activity in timely manner

·        Develops line trial protocols and writes trial reports, SOP’s and specifications

·        Identifies key quality attributes for packaging components

·        Works with plant associates to gain alignment to specifications

·        Performs packaging testing and analyzes results to determine if packaging meets standards

·        Develops, writes and validates test methods to evaluate performance of packaging prototypes

·        Examines quality issues with packaging and works with suppliers to correct issues

·        Provides guidance and direction to junior scientists

·        Ensures their activity is aligned to project milestones

·        Is the point of contact for all packaging related questions

·        Trains new hires on test methods and departmental SOPs

·        Plans own workload to ensure tasks and objectives are completed and collaborates as a participative team member to ensure R&D milestones are met

·        Makes and supervises production of samples for marketing presentations, laboratory evaluation, consumer and clinical testing.

Education:  Requires a Bachelor of Science Degree in Packaging or equivalent with a Masters Degree a plus.

Experience:  Requires 5-7 or more years of relevant CPG experience in packaging development; previous experience in wipes packaging advantageous; developing and launching innovative packaging solutions;

Required Knowledge: 

Familiar with prototyping techniques such as 3-D printing; plant/equipment experienceAdvanced technical knowledge of consumer packaging, e.g., flexible films, rigid containers/injection molding, cartons, and corrugated;

Skills and Abilities: 

Strong interpersonal communication skills; autonomous work ethic; teamwork mentality; excellent project management skills; demonstrated ability to lead technical teams; able to work in a fast-paced environment, with multiple projects of varying complexity; strong problem-solving skills and independence.  Computer skills- MS Office, Tops, Cape, CAD
